INSIGHTS WITH ALYS BRYAN, DESIGN INSIDER’S MANAGING EDITOR
29 May. 2024
As the media partner of Commercial Interiors UK, Design Insider plays a pivotal role in spotlighting the brilliance of commercial interior designers and suppliers. Through its dedication to sharing the latest industry knowledge, products, projects, news, and events, Design Insider fosters an engaging dialogue within the commercial furnishing sector.
We caught up with Alys Bryan, the Managing Editor at Design Insider, to delve into her editorial vision for 2024, how the magazine bolsters Commercial Interiors UK members, and the exciting introduction of Design Insider’s inaugural in-person events.
- What do you find most rewarding about your role as Managing Editor?
I thoroughly enjoy the creative aspect of my role and as a designer myself, I understand the critical importance of casting the net wide to discover a wealth of inspiration for our readers. I'm confident that by expanding our editorial focus beyond traditional boundaries to include fields like exhibition design and crafts, we're providing a richer, more varied source of inspiration. It's my aim to ensure that we balance this with the crucial, often technical, information that our industry thrives on. This blend is what I believe truly supports our sector's growth and innovation.
- What exciting editorial plans do you have in store for this year?
I’ve had the opportunity to commission thought-provoking content from a selection of esteemed authors, each well known for their ability to address the needs of commercial interior designers.
I'm extremely proud that Design Insider has established itself as a platform for meaningful discussions with industry leaders. Through our editorial content, and our in-person events, we will continue to drive discussions that will benefit the sector as a whole.
- Can you elaborate on the importance of content campaigns?
For 2024, we have launched four expansive content campaigns, each designed to explore a specific topic in depth. These campaigns are deliberately broad, allowing us to include a wide range of voices from Commercial Interiors UK members, commercial interior designers, and industry experts.
Our first quarter will delve into sensory design, followed by explorations into the next generation, colour, and finally, care in the last quarter. These focused campaigns create opportunities for contribution and engagement, I know that these explorations will shine a spotlight on our community’s expertise.
- As media partner of Commercial Interiors UK, how does Design Insider support the commercial suppliers who are members of the trade association?
Design Insider showcases the unique products and expertise of Commercial Interiors UK members right where their ideal audience can see them. We’ve put together a menu of editorial opportunities that members can dive into, free of charge.
Making sure CIUK members’ content reaches our audience, comes down to us consistently publishing the kind of editorial that our readers— knowledgeable commercial interior designers and architects—are on the lookout for. Content that doesn’t just pique their interest but genuinely enriches their work. I know how crucial it is to publish stories that both capture the imagination and provide solid, useful information.
By striking this balance, we’re able to ensure that both our readers and the Commercial Interiors UK members get exactly what they need from us, fostering a community that’s all about growth, inspiration, and pushing the boundaries of commercial interior design.
- Alys, what about Supplier Finder?
Of course, it’s extremely exciting! This year we have replaced Product Finder with a brand-new search platform. Supplier Finder is the UK's only search platform for accredited suppliers of commercial interior furnishings, launched in partnership by Commercial Interiors UK and Design Insider.
- What's new with Design Insider Talks in 2024?
Since its launch in 2022, Design Insider Talks has seen remarkable growth. In 2024, we're excited to expand our reach further by hosting three distinct types of talk events. We'll be taking the stage at leading industry events, hosting talks within commercial supplier showrooms, and rounding out the year with a series of online discussions. This diverse approach allows us to share knowledge and insights across a wide array of platforms, making it accessible to our audience wherever they are.
- Beyond talks, are there other in-person events planned?
Absolutely! I'm thrilled to announce that Design Insider will be hosting two Design Insider Forums for the first time. These events are designed as dynamic half-day sessions, each focused on a specific topic. They aim to provide deep insights that translate into actionable strategies for design and business practices. Attendees will have the chance to engage in a variety of sessions, from keynote speeches to interactive workshops, all while earning valuable CPD points. I think this is so exciting! I’m delighted that we’ll be offering a new way to connect with and contribute to the professional growth of our community.
- Who can be featured in Design Insider, and how can they get involved?
Featuring in Design Insider is an opportunity open to all Commercial Interior Designers and Commercial Interiors UK members, often at no cost. For commercial suppliers who are not yet members, we offer detailed advertorial packages. These packages are an excellent way for businesses to gain visibility within the industry.
We're always looking to showcase new and exciting projects, products, and insights, so I encourage anyone interested to contact me for more information on how they can become part of our vibrant community.
Alys's dedication to broadening the scope of Design Insider's content, coupled with her commitment to fostering industry dialogue, underscores the vital role the magazine plays within the commercial interiors sector. Her vision for 2024 promises a year filled with enriching discussions, innovative events, and the discovery of Commercial Interiors UK member products which have been specifically developed for commercial interiors and lead in our sector.
